Arms & Armour – “Chafe” | Industrial Post-Punk for a Society Under Pressure

“Chafe” turns social oppression into something abrasive and physical. Arms & Armour build the track around chains, guards and wounded hands to portray the relationship between working and middle-class people and systems of power that demand obedience while declaring justice already complete. Dan Boeckner’s guitar contribution and Krissy Brannan’s viola expand a composition driven by abrasive riffs, mechanized rhythms and controlled noise, creating a constant sense of pressure. The context of The Hunted strengthens that reading: the album was produced, recorded and mixed by the duo at Dark Current, their studio inside a former Cleveland drill-bit factory. The industrial environment becomes a natural extension of the song’s language.

The repeated phrase “the justice is done” becomes particularly significant because it loses any sense of resolution as the track progresses. Against that institutional declaration comes “we’re just undone,” shifting attention back toward those who experience the consequences. The chains represent an obedience that can feel safe precisely because it is familiar, while the broken hands turn individual exhaustion into a collective experience. “Destitute, resolute” captures another contradiction: lacking resources does not necessarily mean abandoning the will to resist.

Sound machinery for a system that tightens

Moving through gothic/dark wave, doom, sludge, industrial and post-punk, abrasive guitars, drums, drones, synths and electronic textures create a mechanical, oppressive atmosphere. The viola introduces an unexpected layer within this landscape of weight and noise.

The song turns its vocabulary of chains, surveillance and exhaustion into an equally persistent musical structure. Its machinery is not merely aesthetic: it reproduces the pressure of a system that keeps operating even as the people inside it begin to break.
