LUNG – Isolated Gun | Three decades turned into noise and tension

LUNG opens Fog with a track that transforms different stages of its own history into a single physical release. Isolated Gun combines lyrics from “She’s Got a Gun”, originally released on Cactii (1991), with the rhythmic foundation of “Isolation”, from Cancer (2024), connecting material separated by more than three decades. Built around James Woods’ insistent bass and Zak White’s drumming, Dave White’s guitars erupt in bursts of noise that keep the song in a state of constant tension. Recorded with the rest of Fog in just two days at The Surgery in Wellington, the single retains a direct, abrasive quality where immediacy becomes an essential part of its identity.

The lyrics construct a threatening scene that grows increasingly uncomfortable. An armed woman appears connected to hardship and isolation, while the narrator’s perspective moves between fascination, fear and rejection. The violence does not remain static: it eventually turns against the person holding the weapon, leaving the story suspended in an unsettling resolution. The repeated “I ride” extends that sense of emptiness after the impact. The band has described the composition as a song of love and hate, a contradiction that runs through both the narrative and the music. The result does not attempt to explain violence; it keeps the listener inside its discomfort.

Groove, noise and post-hardcore combustion

Isolated Gun moves through punk, post-hardcore and noise rock, drawing its power from contrast. The bass establishes a persistent, almost hypnotic groove, while the drums maintain the momentum and the guitars arrive as bursts of abrasive noise. The combination creates a particular kind of tension: beneath the chaos lies a firm rhythmic structure that keeps the song moving forward. The fast recording process behind Fog reinforces that urgency and preserves the physical character of the performance.

The gun as a point of no return

The gun concentrates the song’s symbolic conflict. At first, it represents a threat directed toward another person; later, it becomes the instrument of self-destructive violence. That transformation shifts the story from external danger toward an internal tragedy that never receives an emotional resolution. The song’s own history works in a similar way: material from 1991 and 2024 is reconstructed in the present, making Isolated Gun a piece where LUNG’s past does not function as an archive, but as material that remains active.
