An album that understands emotional uncertainty
Some albums soundtrack specific moments, while others seem to understand exactly what it feels like to move through change. It Comes In Waves, the debut album from New Constellations, finds its greatest strength in that emotional honesty, connecting deeply with listeners through experiences that feel universally human: fear of change, emotional anxiety, nostalgia for past versions of ourselves, and the search for hope during uncertain moments.
Across thirteen songs, Harlee Case and Josh Smith build a narrative where emotions rise and fall in constant cycles, turning the album into a reflection of emotional processes many people experience but rarely know how to articulate. From the opening track “Intro (Nothing Stays the Same),” the project establishes its core idea: nothing remains unchanged.
That feeling continues through songs like “Secret Safe,” where the duo reflects on relationships and friendships that survive distance, time, and personal transformation. The song draws strength from intimate everyday details, making it easy for listeners to connect with the feeling of emotionally holding onto someone even as life moves forward.

Dream pop textures and emotionally driven storytelling
Musically, It Comes In Waves blends synth-pop, dream pop, and indie electronic influences through nostalgic and atmospheric production. Bright synthesizers, floating melodies, and immersive textures reinforce the emotional weight of the album, especially on tracks like “Waterslides” and “Dandelion.” Both songs transform emotional vulnerability and the fear of intimacy into warm, ethereal soundscapes capable of creating immediate emotional resonance.
One of the album’s strongest qualities is how naturally it translates complex emotions into accessible storytelling. “I Disappear” explores mental exhaustion and the feeling of becoming lost within your own thoughts, while “I’m Waiting Now” captures the emotional fatigue of being trapped inside relationships and memories that endlessly repeat themselves. Rather than dramatizing pain, these songs present anxiety and uncertainty with honesty, making them feel authentic and relatable.
Hope and emotional rebirth beneath the melancholy
Even in its most introspective moments, the album leaves room for healing and personal growth. “Believe Again” stands as one of the project’s most hopeful moments, reflecting on recovering self-confidence and healing past wounds, while “Edge of the World” captures the feeling of stepping into a new chapter without fear of the unknown.
With It Comes In Waves, New Constellations transforms intimate experiences into shared emotions, crafting an album where melancholy, love, and hope move together like waves that inevitably leave us changed.
