Andrew Eason – “Splashdown” | Saying Goodbye Without Knowing Why

Accepting that someone is leaving doesn’t mean you stop wondering what could have gone differently. On “Splashdown,” Andrew Eason turns a farewell into a journey into the unknown: the person who leaves seems to be returning to their home planet, while the one left behind tries to understand why their paths no longer align. This cosmic image transforms an intimate separation into a distance that feels impossible to cross.

The narrator insists he won’t blame the other person for leaving, yet admits he’ll keep searching for them and revisiting his own decisions. Between packed suitcases, an engine ready to go, and the confession that he couldn’t bear to witness the departure, a painful contradiction emerges: wanting to let someone go without being ready to accept their absence.

Melancholic Indie Rock for a Farewell Left Unresolved

With its slow development and melancholic melodic sensibility, “Splashdown” moves between indie rock, alternative rock, and slacker rock. Its cosmic imagery contrasts with references to Rockville, Duluth, and Memphis, bringing a story of seemingly astronomical proportions back to places that might hold the memory of someone who is gone.

The Questions That Survive Departure

As the first single in a planned series of ten songs Andrew Eason intends to release over the coming year, “Splashdown” finds its center in what grief cannot resolve. The repetition of “dust to dust, rust to rust” suggests decay and transformation, while the farewell remains open-ended, without a definitive explanation. Sometimes the hardest part of losing someone is continuing to search for an answer when there’s no one left to ask.
