Scott Fisher – “Try So Hard” | The Irony of Trying Too Hard

Trying to fit in can become an exhausting performance. On “Try So Hard,” Scott Fisher takes an ironic look at people who construct idealized versions of themselves to gain acceptance, as if belonging to a social circle depended on checking off a list of expectations. The image of a “beautiful disguise” captures the distance between projecting an appealing identity and feeling comfortable with who you really are.

The persistent “Knock knock” portrays someone still waiting at the door, while the question of whether time is running out adds urgency to the search for recognition. The central line — “you can’t be cool when you try that hard” — turns that insecurity into a sharp observation: the more we try to control how others perceive us, the harder it becomes to appear authentic.

Bedroom Pop and Retro Soul with an Unhurried Groove

Moving between lo-fi pop, psychedelic rock, and touches of retro soul, Fisher builds a laid-back groove alongside bassist Tim Lefebvre and drummer Joey Waronker. The Wurlitzer, guitars, and relaxed vocal delivery create a natural flow that contrasts with the social pressure described in the lyrics. Rather than mirroring the protagonist’s urgency, the music observes it from an ironic distance.

Authenticity Doesn’t Need a Performance

Featured on A Billion Suns, “Try So Hard” suggests that acceptance loses its meaning when it requires constant pretending. Fisher avoids turning that criticism into a lecture, letting the contrast between the easygoing groove and the anxiety of fitting in speak for itself.
