Sad Cypress – “Three Wishes” | The mystery of wanting what we don’t understand

What does a wish reveal when we stop seeing it as a promise and begin to question its consequences? On “Three Wishes,” Sophie Cartmell, the artist behind Sad Cypress, turns that uncertainty into a composition shaped by psychedelic folk and theatrical intensity. Conceived as a soundtrack for Halloween eve, the song evokes a hall of mirrors where motivations multiply and no reflection offers a definitive answer. Its appeal lies in the uneasy space between fascination and apprehension.

The idea of three wishes recalls magical tales in which getting what we want can transform our lives, though not necessarily in the ways we expect. The connection to Frankenstein extends that unease toward the consequences of pursuing something without fully understanding what it entails. Rather than turning these references into a moral lesson, Cartmell leaves the interpretations open. Mystery becomes an invitation to examine the distance between what we think we want and what we actually need. Each reflection reveals a possibility, but also a contradiction we might prefer not to acknowledge.

Shadowy folk with an experimental edge

An acoustic guitar motif, described as moving through dark waters, anchors the song’s atmosphere. Classically resonant arpeggios add delicacy, while Cartmell’s haunting vocal performance introduces tension. References to Kate Bush’s later work and Shakespears Sister place the track between experimentation and melodrama.

Desire as a mirror

“Three Wishes” finds its strength in the questions it refuses to answer. Sad Cypress turns introspection into an enigmatic soundscape where beauty coexists with the unknown, and every wish has the potential to reveal something unexpected about the person making it.
