Lucy Wentworth – “Talking to Myself” | Returning to Who We Were to Understand Who We Are

Imagining a conversation with our younger self can reveal how much we have changed and how much of that person we may still need. On “Talking to Myself”, Lucy Wentworth turns a simple coffee date into a meeting between two versions of the same life. The adult Lucy recognizes the girl in cowboy boots and red jeans, full of questions about Nashville, love, and the future, while also realizing that the innocence she once carried contained a confidence experience may have slowly worn away.

Everyday details — two sugars in tea, a golden retriever photograph, the desire to move out — make the passage of time tangible. The line “You don’t have to, then or now” offers a quietly powerful form of acceptance: we do not always need to make sense of everything we feel in order to move forward. And beneath the desire for independence comes another realization: “quiet is the loneliest sound”. Growing up also means discovering that some freedoms carry an emotional cost.

Between Nashville and Introspection

The song combines singer-songwriter storytelling with an emo-inflected emotional sensibility, drawing from influences such as Taylor Swift and Jimmy Eat World. Its conversational structure allows small memories to reveal deeper transformations.

What We Can Still Recover

“Talking to Myself” does not look backward to rewrite the past. It looks at it tenderly, recognizing that the younger version also possessed something the adult still needs: the feeling that everything was still possible.
