Projecte Astrolabi – “Laniakea” | A psychedelic journey through the vastness of the universe

Our galaxy is only one part of a much larger cosmic structure. Inspired by the galaxy supercluster that contains the Milky Way, Projecte Astrolabi’s “Laniakea” translates that difficult-to-imagine scale into an instrumental journey through movement, expansion, and suspension. The name, meaning “immense heaven” in Hawaiian, provides a starting point for a composition that does not attempt to explain the universe, but instead approaches its mystery through music.

A hypnotic guitar riff establishes the journey’s central axis, while an ethereal melody gradually expands its dimensions. A keyboard solo builds the intensity until the composition abandons its regular pulse and enters a rubato section, where time seems to lose its coordinates. This moment of rhythmic freedom transforms the listening experience: what once moved along a recognizable trajectory begins to float, as if the music had briefly slipped out of its orbit. The riff’s return restores the momentum and reconnects the ending with the starting point, although the intervening passage has changed our perception of the journey. Projecte Astrolabi thus creates an exploration in which temporarily losing one’s bearings becomes part of the discovery.

Psychedelic jazz-funk between pulse and suspension

The composition combines psychedelic jazz-funk, jazz fusion, and instrumental psychedelia. The guitar provides a recurring motif, the keyboard drives one of the track’s most intense moments, and the rubato passage creates a contrast that temporarily frees the melody from its rhythmic structure. Repetition and expansion coexist without losing their guiding thread.

Returning with a different perspective

“Laniakea” invites us to contemplate what lies beyond our everyday scale without trying to reduce it to an explanation. Its movement between energy and stillness suggests that exploring the unknown means accepting moments when we no longer know exactly where we are. Sometimes, returning to the same point is enough to discover that we no longer hear it in quite the same way.
