Antje Duvekot – “NO” | Saying No as an Act of Reclaiming Power

“No” turns refusal into a declaration of autonomy. Against expectations of being pleasant, available, and accommodating, Antje Duvekot responds with a direct, sarcastic, deliberately uncomfortable voice. The narrator refuses to become a jukebox, a blank screen, a therapist, or a mother for people who want to project their needs onto her. Even the relationship with an audience comes under scrutiny: buying a ticket does not mean purchasing access to her intimacy.

The song gains its force by transforming frustration into an answer that requires no apology. The reference to a young woman facing someone who had “all the power” introduces a darker dimension of abuse and imbalance, while “a goddess on the rise” becomes an act of reclaiming self-worth. Anger is not treated as a flaw, but as a tool for establishing boundaries.

Uncompromising Singer-Songwriter Writing

Within Duvekot’s confessional and observational tradition, “No” adopts a more confrontational, loud, ironic, and irreverent voice. Repetition, explicit language, and expletives are central to its expression, matching the character of No: raw, funny, profane, emotionally unfiltered, and unapologetically unconciliatory.

A Word That Changes Meaning

The jukebox and “blank screen” represent different forms of dehumanization: available entertainment or a surface for other people’s expectations. Against the “sharks in the penthouse” and “wolves in the henhouse,” the narrator claims her space. “No” stops being passive rejection and becomes agency: recognizing self-love also means deciding when a door needs to remain closed.
