SCHØØL – “Somehow” | Learning to Let Go Also Means Learning to Love Yourself

“Somehow” finds its center in a breakup that has not quite become the past. The line “Somehow I know / I’m not coming back” marks a painful farewell, but also a necessary decision: before explaining what happened or trying to repair what ended, there is a need for distance. “Give me some time to love myself” captures that search for space to rebuild a relationship with oneself after an experience marked by guilt, nostalgia, and emotional exhaustion.

Burned pages and ashes in the hands make memory tangible. A story can be destroyed, but its remains stay behind. The song recognizes precisely that difficulty: time cannot always explain what love demands or provide satisfying answers. Recovery therefore does not arrive as an immediate resolution. “Heart beats slow” suggests a process that needs to move at its own pace, accepting that some questions may never find an answer.

Grunge, Shoegaze, and a ’90s Alternative Legacy

“Somehow” combines grunge, shoegaze, Britpop, and baggy rock within SCHØØL’s hybrid identity, with an explicit connection to skate culture. The result retains the band’s rock dimension while extending the alternative sensibility established on their debut, I think my life has been OK.

Forgiveness Begins Within

“Close my window” works as an image of voluntary isolation: shutting out the world to understand what is happening inside. The final repetition of “love myself” shifts the focus from loss toward self-care. “Somehow” does not attempt to resolve grief, but recognizes that after a breakup there is another relationship to rebuild: the one we have with ourselves.
