Mara – “Gazing Back” | When Darkness Looks Back

In “Gazing Back,” Mara turns solitude into a space where looking is no longer a passive act. Gert Stockmans’ project works with deliberately minimal lyrics to create an introspective experience: “In solitude / I gaze into you” initially establishes a gaze directed toward another presence, but that relationship soon changes. “You gaze back into me” transforms contemplation into confrontation, as if whatever we are trying to understand could also reveal something we would rather keep hidden.

The song does not explain that darkness; it remains in front of it. “Back to darkness / From the sky” introduces a movement downward, from an external space toward something more intimate, while the repeated phrases return like thoughts that cannot quite resolve themselves. Grief, isolation, and unease become less subjects being narrated than emotional states sustained by the song’s own structure.

Slow-Burning Blackgaze

Moving between post-black metal, blackgaze, post-metal, and post-rock, “Gazing Back” develops dark textures and a sense of sonic erosion. Harm Peters’ drums and Anthe Huybrechts’ vocals expand the emotional dimension of the composition, where atmosphere carries as much weight as the words.

Looking Inward

The verb “gaze” organizes the entire song: to look, to remain, to be seen. Once darkness looks back, distance disappears and introspection becomes vulnerable. Mara finds its central tension there: confronting what remains hidden may also mean accepting that it can reveal something about ourselves.
