Evelyn Cross – “The Orion Nebula” | A Point of Suspension in an Interstellar Journey

Designed as a station within a larger journey through space, “The Orion Nebula” is the fifth track on Voyage of the Hayakumo, a 49-minute instrumental work conceived as the soundtrack to an interstellar voyage aboard a fictional spacecraft. Evelyn Cross removes the voice and allows analog synthesizers to shape a sense of distance, movement and discovery. The Orion Nebula becomes an imagined destination, while the music transforms an astronomical reference into an open space for interpretation.

Without a vocal narrative, the focus shifts toward timbre, texture and electronic movement. Within Voyage of the Hayakumo, the piece can be understood as a perceptual transition: a moment when the earthly environment begins to lose definition against a cosmic landscape. Rather than literally describing outer space, the concept uses imagination to expand the scale of listening. Contemplation, curiosity and spaciousness emerge from the possibility of projecting personal images onto a journey beyond familiar coordinates.

Synthesizers for imagining other worlds

Moving between experimental electronics, ambient and krautrock, the analog construction places texture at the center. References to Steve Roach, Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream connect the project to a tradition of atmospheric exploration, while the synthesizers add a retrofuturistic quality consistent with its science-fiction imagery.

The nebula as a station along the journey

The U.S.S. Hayakumo serves as the project’s narrative vehicle, while the Orion Nebula becomes one of its destinations. Through that meeting of space exploration, imagination and electronic experimentation, Evelyn Cross turns an astronomical landscape into something that exists not simply as an image, but as a sonic experience.
