Jitensha – “Telling Lies” | When the Identity You Built Starts Running Out of Air

“I’ve been telling lies / Trying hard to recognize myself” captures the central tension of “Telling Lies”: building a functional version of yourself until that identity begins to feel unfamiliar. Jitensha turns that disconnection into physical imagery—dragging your feet, becoming an empty shell, sinking underwater—and uses breathing as a metaphor for identity, exhaustion, and the need to recover clarity.

The song does not offer an immediate resolution. “Just a nose above the water” describes a state of being held at the edge, while “Forgetting how to breathe” pushes the loss of identity into something physically suffocating. Against that weight comes the possibility of shedding the constructed self and feeling light again. Dark streets, windows, and streetlights expand the sense of isolation until skate ramps introduce another kind of energy: speed, open arms, and tears. Vulnerability begins to shift from a sign of exhaustion into a form of movement.

Lightness as a Counterpoint to Emotional Weight

Jitensha moves through lo-fi rock, bedroom pop, indie pop, and neo-psychedelia. Intimate production, grooves, and slightly dusty textures maintain an organic quality, with an instrumental sensibility described as close to Khruangbin. The music retains a certain brightness while the lyrics move through alienation, creating a contrast that keeps the track from becoming entirely dark.

Getting Out of Your Head to Return to the Body

“Straight up / Give up / Get out your head / Let up / Fade out” works almost like a mantra for gradual release. Water represents the limit of disconnection; the skate ramps, by contrast, restore movement and space. “Telling Lies” finds its strength in that transition: letting go of an identity that no longer fits may not provide an immediate answer, but it can create the possibility of breathing again.
