The Grapes – “Repeat Mode” | Post-punk for desire that refuses to disappear

A relationship can grow cold long before someone manages to leave it behind mentally. The Grapes’ “Repeat Mode”, the first preview of the Seoul-based duo’s upcoming EP, lives inside that uncomfortable space where attraction survives emotional distance. Built around memories of encounters that keep returning—a shared street, a lingering look, someone walking away, sleepless nights—the track turns emotional fixation into something almost physical.

Its title provides the perfect mechanism for that state of mind. “Repeat mode” is not simply about remembering someone; it describes being caught replaying an experience that no longer belongs to the present. The references to a connection growing colder and to an explicitly one-sided fixation make the song less about romance than about desire continuing after reality has already shifted. There is even a desire to remain inside the other person’s mind as intensely as they remain inside yours.

Rough edges for a restless fixation

The combination of post-punk, indie rock and garage rock gives the track an appropriately raw framework. Aggression and sensuality coexist without smoothing away the discomfort, while the directness of the sound gives the narrator’s fixation a tangible, immediate quality.

When memory gets stuck on playback

Repetition operates as both lyrical device and central concept. Each return to the same memory mirrors the narrator’s psychological loop: wanting to move forward while the mind keeps going back. The Grapes turn the refrain into a representation of obsession, leaving “Repeat Mode” suspended between longing, anxiety and frustration.
