“Pandemonium” opens Nordic Groove Collective’s debut album by making genre boundaries feel secondary. The Oslo collective places Scandinavian rock and black metal guitars alongside dub grooves, electronics and the Sámi vocal tradition of joik. Its identity does not come simply from stacking influences, but from allowing these different languages to remain in tension. With no conventional lyrics, the song’s narrative weight shifts toward its sonic structure and, above all, Torgeir Vassvik’s voice, which moves through the track as a connection between an ancestral practice and a contemporary musical setting.
That contrast becomes the song’s main expressive force. Without a verbal narrative dictating its meaning, “Pandemonium” communicates through the coexistence of musical traditions that are rarely placed within the same frame. The guitars provide weight and distortion, dub introduces a different rhythmic logic, electronics expand the sonic space, and joik refuses to remain decorative. Vassvik’s voice becomes a form of presence and cultural belonging capable of carrying intensity without relying on conventional words.
Distortion Meets Groove
Alternative rock, alternative metal, black metal, dub and electronic elements create a structure where the physical weight of heavy guitars meets a different approach to rhythm. Vassvik’s joik brings an organic, ancestral dimension into that environment, standing in contrast with the electronic elements and becoming one of the track’s defining sonic forces.
Different Times Sharing the Same Space
The central narrative gesture of “Pandemonium” lies in placing an ancestral vocal tradition inside a contemporary structure without isolating it from the rest. Joik connects Sámi tradition with metal, dub and electronics, while the track establishes the conceptual doorway into an album built around this coexistence. Nordic Groove Collective does not attempt to erase the differences between these languages; it keeps their contrast audible and makes that friction part of the music’s identity.
