Lima appears in “Grey One (La Gris)” as a city that cannot simply be described; it has to be inhabited, even when its landscape seems to have lost every color. SYLVR turns grey into both a visual and emotional condition, a layer of dust covering green, carmine, sound and even the ability to dream. Written in Spanish and recorded in London, the track carries the project’s darker imagination into a geography deeply connected to Raquel Bartra’s identity.
The repeated feeling that “now everything is grey” creates a sense of exhaustion and stagnation, yet the lyrics leave small openings inside that perception. The labyrinth first suggests the impossibility of finding an exit, then gradually reveals that one might actually be visible. Stars, candles and tides extend that possibility without turning it into a promise of transformation. “Yo soy de Lima, la gris” makes the urban portrait personal: belonging to the city also means carrying the things that make it difficult to inhabit.
A city built from drones and distortion
Blending gothic, dark wave, industrial techno and electronic elements, SYLVR combines distorted guitars, shadowy drones and dense electronic textures. Raquel Bartra’s ethereal vocal introduces fragility against that heavy landscape, while the instrumentation sustains a feeling of repetition and wear. The result feels spectral, industrial and physical at once, as if the city itself had become a sonic architecture.
Grey as identity
The dominant color moves beyond description and becomes a form of belonging. The labyrinth initially represents confinement, then an uncertain possibility of escape; stars and candles become small points of orientation within the darkness. That ambiguity prevents an easy conclusion. “La Gris” does not need to turn Lima into a brighter place. Instead, it finds something more complicated in the possibility of absorbing its shadows and recognizing yourself within them.
