Quells – “Crossbowed” | When being present is not enough to connect

The feet remain on the ground while the mind travels somewhere unknown. That image opens “Crossbowed” and defines a song built around an intimate fracture: the distance that emerges when two people remain close but stop truly listening to each other. Quells finds its conflict in a failure of communication that is far less dramatic and, for that reason, deeply recognizable. “You don’t hear what you say” returns throughout the song as both an accusation and a desperate attempt to reopen a conversation.

The song treats words as a form of care. Once they stop being heard, they can end up hurting the people who matter most. The narrator does not stand outside that conflict either, recognizing the difficulty of remaining inside a relationship that destabilizes him and considering forgetting as a possible response. Yet “so just communicate” shifts that impulse. Repetition turns the phrase into an increasingly urgent plea, while “I’ll forget what you say / All for you / I’m here for you” preserves a sense of devotion even after the damage.

Between Atmosphere and Wound

Quells’ indie rock finds an enveloping quality through dream pop and chillwave, softening the surface without removing the emotional tension. The melody keeps the song moving while the atmosphere expands its sense of confusion and vulnerability. It fits naturally within Jaded Love, where love, loss, memory, and connection exist without rigid genre boundaries.

The Possibility of Staying

“Crossbowed” contains a paradox within its own title: an image of impact and vulnerability placed inside a comparatively softer sonic landscape. Words can wound, yet the desire to be heard remains. By the end, the song stops searching for an explanation and arrives somewhere simpler: remaining available to someone even after communication has caused pain.
