Certainties can become fragile when something that once seemed stable begins to take on a different shape. “The Shape of Things,” the third track in a three-song series created by Devereux Scales with producer Jordan Lawlor in May 2026, explores precisely that moment of adjustment. The band combines post-punk, shoegaze, and indie rock into a track driven by bright guitars, restless rhythms, and darker melodies, while the lyrics move through broken promises, deception, and a perception that can no longer be fully trusted.
The repetition of “Make the adjustment” works like an instruction returning again and again as reality shifts. The song questions how much we can trust what we see and what happens when disappointment forces us to reconsider our expectations. Images of dreams, wind moving through leaves, and the insistence on believing what appears before us reinforce that sense of instability.
Learning to readjust
“The Shape of Things” conveys tension, uncertainty, disappointment, and unease. Its conflict is not simply about discovering that someone has been deceptive, but about realizing that the way we understand what happened may also need to change.
A reality in motion
Devereux Scales blends post-punk, shoegaze, and indie rock, drawing from the traditions associated with 4AD and Creation Records. Bright guitars contrast with darker melodies while the rhythms maintain a constant sense of movement. Emerging between 2023 and 2024 from musicians with extensive experience in the San Francisco Bay Area independent scene, the project uses this new series of songs to further establish its own identity through texture, atmosphere, and momentum.
