joe and the sun – “About You, About Time – Version 1” | Indie folk shaped by emotional exhaustion and release

Staying inside a relationship long after it has emotionally ended gives “About You, About Time – Version 1” its central tension. The single marks joe and the sun’s return after a pause, turning accumulated frustration into a farewell that moves through disappointment, anger and, eventually, a sense of release. The repeated “too long” becomes particularly effective because it captures the exhaustion of remaining in a situation that has already lost its meaning.

Broken promises, accusations and the image of someone caught “red handed” establish a conflict in which trust no longer seems capable of being rebuilt. “Empty handed” deepens that sense of emotional depletion: after waiting and staying, the narrator is left with very little. Rather than searching for reconciliation or a satisfying explanation, the narrative gradually shifts toward reclaiming personal autonomy.

Energy caught between tension and relief

Rooted in a singer-songwriter sensibility with elements of indie folk and indie rock, the track keeps its focus on the emotional weight of the song itself. Its stated moods — happy, energetic and moody — create an interesting contrast with the bitterness of the subject matter, giving the track enough movement to avoid becoming purely melancholic.

When letting go of the answers becomes freedom

The closing line, “I don’t give a fuck about you now”, decisively changes the narrator’s position. It is not a peaceful resolution born from understanding everything, but a visceral declaration of independence. That contrast between accumulated frustration and the bluntness of the ending becomes one of the song’s strongest ideas: sometimes moving forward means finally refusing to keep looking for explanations.
