Gareth Inkster – “A Few Tomorrows” / “You Are Not Young Start Walking” | Two ways of looking at time and consciousness

Closure can also mean accepting that some stories do not come with an immediate explanation. “A Few Tomorrows”, the closing track on Gareth Inkster’s upcoming four-song EP, looks back on a finished relationship through regret and distance. Its title leaves the future deliberately unresolved: perhaps a few tomorrows will bring an understanding of what never became possible, though the song offers no promise that they will. Love, loneliness and nostalgia remain suspended in a state of incomplete acceptance.

“You Are Not Young Start Walking” turns that gaze in another direction. A nighttime walk home after Supercrawl, and the sight of steam rising from a sewer grate before gathering beneath a streetlight like a halo, become the starting point for a meditation on consciousness and decision. Walking takes on an inward meaning: choosing and acting become part of being alive. Kierkegaard’s influence and the later reference to hidden motivations associated with Carl Jung push an ordinary urban image toward a deeper question about what we choose to confront and what we keep concealed.

Between acoustic intimacy and alternative tension

The two tracks move through singer-songwriter, acoustic folk, lo-fi rock, indie rock and alternative rock, but approach those spaces differently. “A Few Tomorrows” begins almost a cappella before expanding into baritone saxophone, violin and drums recorded at St Luke’s Mission Church. “You Are Not Young Start Walking”, performed and recorded by Inkster himself, places an unconventional harmonic language inside a structure close to pop.

Walking toward what remains hidden

The connection between both songs lies less in their narratives than in how they approach uncertainty. One looks toward tomorrow for meaning after loss; the other looks toward the light and asks what happens when we finally choose to act. Inkster avoids definitive answers in both cases. The future and consciousness remain open spaces, and that unresolved quality becomes part of what makes these songs compelling.
