A cinematic archive can become sound as well as documentation. “Clay,” composed by Taul Katz for Barbara Forever, emerges from a process in which fragments of Barbara Hammer’s films stop functioning solely as records and become material for a new musical library. The track previews the documentary’s score, built from more than eighty films, unseen footage, photographs, personal objects and interviews with the experimental filmmaker. Katz reshapes those fragments into an ambient piece where electronic and acoustic elements seem suspended between image and memory.
Rather than simply illustrating a story, “Clay” participates in the reconstruction at the heart of the film. Sounds drawn from Hammer’s archive are reorganized into another way of listening to the past, creating a dialogue between what the filmmaker recorded and Katz’s contemporary interpretation. That transformation is particularly compelling because the music does not attempt to define the meaning of the images. Instead, it preserves a sense of mystery, as though the memories were still taking shape.
Acoustic textures inside an electronic landscape
Moving through ambient and experimental electronic music with elements of indie rock, the piece combines synthesizers, guitar and bass with harp, piano, cello, woodwinds, trombone and drums. The expansive instrumentation gives Katz room to create an organic, cinematic atmosphere without losing its experimental character.
Giving the archive another form
The archive itself becomes the central metaphor of “Clay”: something that can be reshaped while retaining traces of where it came from. Katz does not reproduce Hammer’s past; she turns it into sound. The result becomes a contemplative exploration of memory, legacy and discovery.
