Pharaoh’s Daughter – Asleep | When desire travels through time and finds a new language

Some texts endure because each generation discovers a new way to give them voice. “Asleep”, one of the defining moments of Songs of Desire, draws from the Song of Songs to create a work that feels remarkably contemporary. Rather than treating tradition as something distant, Basya Schechter allows it to breathe within a musical language where ancient influences and modern expression coexist effortlessly.

The song unfolds in a space where longing is never purely romantic or purely spiritual. Both dimensions become inseparable, leaving absence, desire and devotion open to interpretation. That ambiguity gives the composition its lasting power, allowing centuries-old poetry to continue speaking with remarkable emotional immediacy.

Middle Eastern traditions woven into contemporary folk and world music

Organic arrangements, acoustic instruments and Middle Eastern and North African influences create a richly textured sound. The production balances historical depth with contemporary sensitivity.

A longing that outlives time itself

Pharaoh’s Daughter transforms an ancient poem into an intimate and deeply relevant experience. The song reminds us that love, absence and spiritual searching remain timeless human questions.
