Moonwards’ ‘Shockwave’: A Shoegaze Storm of Fatalism & Tragic Beauty (Finland)

Finnish band Moonwards releases the single «Shockwave», a track that builds a dense, strident atmosphere perfect for contemplating life’s complexities. The song explores feelings of intensity, fatalism and the tragic beauty in accepting endings – whether as moments of escape or surrender to the inevitable, particularly in contexts of chaos or destruction. This essence is masterfully condensed into a composition balancing melancholy and rawness, with vocals that are smooth yet deeply expressive in conveying these emotions naturally.
«Shockwave» stands out for maintaining the characteristic power and depth of genres like shoegaze, indie rock and alternative rock, while developing a polished, empathetic sonic personality. Moonwards thus creates a musical ecosystem where visceral and contemplative elements coexist, inviting listeners to dive into its layers of meaning with each play.
Lyrically with this track we drew a lot of inspiration from the Lars von Trier film ‘Melancholia’, and just like the film, the titular shockwave travelling through our bodies can both be a literal shockwave of a colliding planet with ours, or a metaphorical one that wakes us up from our collective depressive slumber.
Moonwards – a word brimming with yearning and wanderlust – is a band from Helsinki, Finland, whose music speaks to these very themes. Drawing much of their inspiration from alternative rock, shoegaze, and new wave acts of the 1980s and ‘90s, the band offers their own brand of left field rock music soaked in layers of melodic guitar lines and contemplation on love and loss.
