Ian North estrena ‘Malahat’: viaje guitarrístico por los paisajes de Vancouver (Canadá)

Canadian musician Ian North releases the instrumental single «Malahat», featuring the guitar as both protagonist and guide through a deeply emotional musical journey. The piece offers a paradoxical experience: simultaneously dynamic and contemplative, where each sound invites listeners to construct personal emotions, evoke memories, and create unique narratives from its brilliant, expressive musicality. Inspired by the namesake highway on Vancouver Island, the composition conveys movement, emotional sweetness, and subtle nostalgia within a captivating sonic universe.

Produced by Chris Gartner, the track is accompanied by a video by Jennifer Claveau (North’s wife), using archival footage from Library and Archives Canada, including historic 1912 images of the unpaved Malahat highway. The breathtaking views of Saanich Inlet, the Peninsula, Gulf Islands, and coastal mountains enhance the themes of exploration and wonder in the music, creating a multisensory experience.

“The Malahat is the highway that runs down the east coast of Vancouver Island from Nanaimo to Victoria. I’ve driven it many times, and the cover image of the song is a photo I took of my daughter walking along a wall at a lookout on that very highway… I wanted to develop the song beyond a simple acoustic guitar piece, and working with Chris Gartner helped me achieve that. We worked together to create a sound that matches the scenic beauty of the Malahat with energy and motion.”

Unusually vivid first-person narratives, both confessional and pure confection, are probably his strongest suit, but Toronto songwriter Ian North – born and raised in Ottawa – has spent several years in Vancouver – also has a strong and distinctive voice, and a penchant for clever chord changes that keep his odd melodies in a state of ungrounded suspension somewhere between acoustic pop and jazzy folk. With little more than acoustic guitars, an occasional piano, dobro, cello or accordion, drums, bass and the odd vocal harmony, North creates a richly musical context for his complex yarns (“The Ballad of Stephen Reid” is typical) and ruminations (“Leaving Buffalo”, outstanding) on this, his second independent CD.
