“I love the book Jane Eyre, and I have read it countless times. I find the characters of Jane and Mr. Rochester to be so compelling. I chose to write about Rochester because he is flawed and more relatable. I identified with his humanness,… «Jane” is a theatrical rock song with jaunty verses, soaring choruses, and an intriguing bridge… The song wasn’t finished when we went into the studio. My producer suggested something ‘weird and high’ for the bridge, and that was all it took to finish the song.”
Payne grew up singing with her musical family on a dairy farm in Western New York, later studying jazz voice at SUNY Purchase. She’s a fixture on the New York City live music scene, having performed at many of the city’s most venerated venues. Her musical, The Gunfighter Meets His Match, for which she wrote the books, music, and lyrics was selected for the 2018 New York Musical Festival. In 2019, Payne was invited to join the Johnny Mercer Writers Colony at Goodspeed Musicals. The following year, Payne attended the HBMG National Winter Playwrights Retreat in Grand Lake, CO. She participated in the Goodspeed Festival of New Musicals in 2022.
